The rarely found "pro post" or catching up with the day job

I’ve found myself fully engaged with social media on and offline recently.  Some recent events that have come about are the following and next week is going to be BANANAS!

I preparation for REBarCamp which is finally coming about this Tuesday, a few of us organizers were asked by Dustin Luther to do a podcast on the inaugural 4Realz “Deep Dive”.  The topic:  Is RE Bar Camp worth attending?  I think the answer is a overwhelming yes considering the who’s who of attendance at this point.   This should be an amazing event considering it has never been done for Real Estate before and the energy being put in to it has been outstanding.

Last Tuesday I spoke on a panel for Pow.WowA network of fabulous women”.  The discusion was on Green + Sustainable and how it applies to business and marketing.   I think I learned more than I had to share.  The discussion was very informative and some great questions were raised.

Our panel includes:
- Lucas Heldfond, Spring
- Lauren Fornes, Faceparlour.com
- Matt Scullin, New Resource Bank
- Brad Coy, San Francisco Real Estate Services, Ecobroker
- Joel Karr, Group 41

I’ve recently been dubbed Bloodhound worthy after a bit of hesitation on my part.  I find BloodhoundBlog to be probably the most important and informative platform of writing on Real Estate around, and wanted to let my head clear from this months activities before I got started contributing.   Greg’s invite and Teri’s prodding prompted me to put it at the front of my attention, rather than further procrastinating.  I’m happy to say that I’ve managed to bang out at least a couple posts thus far. *woof*

After Sundays open house (2 of them actually) I will be resting up for the big week.  Monday night we do a little load in and set of for REBarCamp over at the Swedish American Hall… maybe some beers afterwards with a few out of town guests coming in.   Tuesday we rock it!  followed up by Beer for Bloggers, which has been scheduled convieniently downstairs at Cafe Du Nord.

Wednesday starts off Inman Connect with Bloggers Connect which should be real cool.  That evening two parties to rally with one at the Trulia digs over in Portrero and then heading back downtown to wrap up the evenging with the folks from HGTV and FrontDoor.com.    Back conferencing on Thursday, I’m looking forward to hearing Mr. Merlin Mann and then wrapping the whole event up on Friday afternoon.

If I can mange to retain 50% of what I learn and put it to work afterwards I should be in pretty good shape - profession wise ;)  that is at least until September when we do Vegas for RE Blog World.

Listening to him gave me that sense of connectedness and oneness that Carlin talks about with Terry. And, along with Molly Ringwald in Sixteen Candles, George Carlin was one of the first deeply imprinted artistic influences that made me say, “That’s what I want to do.

My friend Alicia Dattner just returned from a long trip in India.  She is an amazing comedian and had this to share about the late George Carlin and his influence on her.

Saturday night escpapism after working  a very hard day. (my 1 day off)  If I could have forseen today’s events, I might have booked a carribean vacation for this week months ago.  Then again…. sometimes there is no escaping.  Everywhere you go - there you are.

Everybody wants you to be special
And everybody wants you to be high
They throw you down a rope when you’re in trouble, baby
Screamin’, “Save me”
Then they charge you with the rescue blues

Today July 10th is my wife Ginger’s birthday. I’m keeping it quick here cause I promised to pick her up from work in about 10 min.   She means everything to me for many reasons, the following are a few:

  • She is a remarkable inspiration in my life.  After putting up with me for a while now, I am reminded of this all the time.
  • Rock solid to lean on.  There is nothing like having someone level headed to lean on when you feel out of sorts.
  • She is a stunning beauty that’s super smart.  What a package.  I feel she challenges my thinking all the time.  This is both good and bad.
  • Fiercely independant and would have it no other way.  Her mother raised her right and she has no problem not being co-dependant.
  • Has never tried to hard to “change” me.  This goes hand in hand with being independent.
  • Has a child-like need for joy.  If you ever get a chance to see her interact with her cat’s you’ll know what I mean.
  • Can be selfless at all the right times.  Her father passed earlier this year, and watching her deal with both him and his family was an act of courage.
  • Loves the sunshine.  What’s not to love about that?  I wish I could be taking her to Costa Rica again this year but that’s just not in the cards right now.
  • Loves Yoga and teaches it with grace.  I can see her becoming an amazing inspiration to others.
  • Loves cake and shiny objects.  Wicked sense of humor.  Above all there is little that is as important as this.
  • …and now I’m keeping her wating.  Did I mention that she’s patient?

Happy Birthday Gingie grrrl!   — The pic was taken just South of the Grand Canyon on I180 a couple yrs. back when we were travelling cross country.

Billie Holiday - “Lady Sings the Blues”

There’s so much to say about Billie Holiday. I wish I had met her, but not just because she’s one of the most revolutionary jazz singers we know; she’s so real in everything she sings about.

Holiday co-wrote this song, and the most redeeming quality to me is the empowering perspective on what it’s like for a woman to have the blues. There’s also a film about Billie Holiday, played by Diana Ross, titled Lady Sings the Blues.

8 Abandoned Theaters (via 8 Aesthetically Awesome Abandoned Movie Theaters | WebUrbanist

really do love these shots of old abandoned theaters.  So much emotional history is tied up there for me.  The story telling in our youth found as early as my childhood swinging on theplay set at the base of the screen at the drive-in theater.  I feel like I grew up at the drive-in.   Raiders of the lost Arc was probably the first movie I tried to watch all the way through at around 13.  By 16 it was were I dated and hung out with my friends with as many cars sometimes we could take up  the whole back row.   The smell of beer, perfume, popcorn in the darkness.  Nothing like it on a hot summer night in the valley.  Some of my greatest memories of youth will be foundly kept there.

These days the local independent theaters in San Francisco are all but torn down or turned into a fitness club or what have you.   It’s a damn pity but the spirit can still be found in the Castro with vintage style seating, old movie classics, and even the organist playing pre-show.

Like some grumpy old man I long for and bitch about the “good ole days” of catching a flick in a one show theatre like the old Coronet or the Alhambra, yet technology is culture shifting us right out of the old ways of movie watching.

Being as there is not a damn thing on TV anymore for a Sunday night we are grateful to have Tivo.  Tonight Ginger turned on a Sundance showing of the Documentary “I’m your man”.   Wonderful stuff came out of this production.   A few stand out covers of Leonard Cohen’s music included the above Antony doing “If it be at your will”.  Rufus Wainright “Chelsea Hotel 2” which took me back walking down 23rd St. were I used to get my hair cut, and a beautiful “Tonight will be fine” by Teddy Thompson, which I must have listenned to 3 more times later, a great find for the Sunday night blues.

Bless my lovely wife for having great taste in poets and musicians.  Is that not reason enought to marry someone?

The nation’s third-largest automaker is set to announce Thursday that it’s making wireless Internet an option on all its 2009 models. The mobile hotspot, called UConnect Web, would be the first such technology from any automaker.
